ABOUT
Michael Dawson founded his counseling practice in 2001 and has been active in his field since 1977. Michael began his career as a Correctional Case Manager for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. He left the counseling field and worked in the business world for the next ten years while pursuing a career in Ministry, receiving ordination in 1996. After moving to Colorado, Michael went on to become a Resident Chaplain at Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver, while working part time on staff at a local church.
During his time in Ministry, Michael realized his passion and gift as a Christian Counselor and began pursuing his calling, serving as a counseling intern at Heritage Christian Center before becoming licensed in Colorado and opening his practice specializing in grief and loss and Equine Assisted Therapy.
In 2001 Michael co-designed and co-facilitated Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) research project to determine the effect of EAP on the outcomes of therapy in an adult male substance addicted population in a residential treatment facility. In 2005, he founded Horses Healing Grief Mini Day Camps, providing equine assisted support services for grieving children. He contracted with the Douglas County School District in suburban Denver to establish The Starfish Program in 2007, a children's grief support program that he helped design and co-facilitates.
Today, Michael continues his practice and presents workshops on Children and Grief, and Equine Facilitated Grief Counseling and Grief Support.
Michael holds a MA in Guidance Counseling and a BA in Speech. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor – LPC#3862 and is a certified Equine Assisted Psychotherapist.
Michael is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, the American counseling Association, the Association of Death Education and Counseling and the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association.
Michael is author of the book Horses Healing Grief, and has written many articles addressing the needs of grieving children and families, equine assisted psychotherapy, and pet loss.
